Aging Is For Quitters. Use These Tricks To Prevent It!

aging

Inevitably, the additive effects of aging begin to show up in our looks and the way our bodies feel, which alters our daily lives and routines. We must counteract these effects at all costs. This article will provide some great ideas to help prevent the more serious issues affecting the growing older population.

The key to dealing with aging is ignoring the numbers. You can easily get depressed as you see your age increase, your height shrink and your weight fluctuate. Let your physician focus on these things. Spend your energy focusing on other things.

Try eating more resveratrol. Studies being conducted about the anti-getting older effects of calorie-restricted diets are promising. Resveratrol, a compound found in grapes and nuts, mimics those benefits. Resvestrol can be found in knotweed, a Japanese root that is the main source of resveratrol companies use for supplements. Another source of reservatrol is within the roots of the South American shrub called Senna quinquangulata.

Using your mind is the best way to keep it active. With age comes wisdom, but that doesn’t mean you should stop seeking out new knowledge. Take a local college class, maybe about computers, or settle in with a crossword puzzle.

One of the keys to successful growing older is to always be willing to learn new things. Learning is important regardless of your age.

Always make certain you are receiving the appropriate rest for your age bracket. Sleeping between seven and nine hours nightly will help your peace of mind and help keep your hormone levels even. If you are sleep deprived you will become agitated, easily irritated and feel just plain lousy.

Happiness is contagious, and you should spread it whenever possible. Making others smile will make you feel great. A simple smile or a kind word is enough, and you should notice that other people treat you better.

A true, lifelong friendship offers energy, love and emotional sustenance to live happily. Age is irrelevant when it comes to forming new friendships. Meet new people by strike up conversations with strangers in the grocery line, on the bus or at an event. It will improve your life.

Go easy on powder cosmetics and foundation to protect your skin as you get older. When aging, your skin needs all the hydration it can get. Use a more simple style of makeup like mascara, eye liner and lip gloss to enhance your natural beauty.

Keep only the positive people in your life. Friends that make you laugh often also make you look and feel younger. Spend as much time as possible doing things you enjoy with people who make you laugh.

Eating excessive amounts of sugar over the course of your life can drastically reduce your lifespan. Sugar is an ingredient that can shorten your life and make you age faster. Studies show that too much sugar can reduce the lifespan of any animal that can ingest it.

You have just read some of the best advice on slowing down, or preventing, the signs of getting older. Preparation for aging can begin at anytime in your life. Age is not a reason to feel or look anything other than your best.

New Pain Treatment Succeeding: Neuromuscular Releases, Manipulation, & Dry Needling

Pain Treatment with Neuromuscular Releases

manual_therapyOne of our more interesting pain-free methods of removing pain that gets a “wow” response is called a neuromuscular release. Now this is not something you’ll find on the internet, and it comes in many different forms. Basically, the practitioner who is trained and skilled in using certain neurological patterns in the body can find a specific sequence to lightly stimulate and turn off an adjacent area of pain.  At this time, no one in our state is offering this type of treatment as we’ve integrated a few different styles to develop our own protocol. We use known reflexes and in the body in a certain way to remove pain. Sometimes we may use a particular nerve, muscle, tendon, pain pattern, nerve pattern, or sclerotome to stimulate in order to get rid of a pain. And yes, it is completely non-force and pain-free.

Imagine coming in with neck pain, a headache, back pain, or some stubborn pain that just won’t yield. Within minutes you are wondering what happened to that pain – (even those pains that have been there for years!) Sometimes we use a method that dampens the pain and within a few hours it’s gone. You leave with special instructions to ensure that this happens.

Pain Treatment with Manipulation

spinal_manipulation_neckIf pain remains after non-force methods are used, we may then move to using a precise mechanical force to remove the pain or problem. Now this treatment is familiar to some as it involves the “cracking” sound that some seek and some fear. Spinal Manipulation as provided in our clinic is a very precise procedure applied by a licensed Doctor of Physical Therapy with advance training in manual therapy. HVLAT or High Velocity Low Amplitude Thrust manipulation is our preferred method as taught through the American Academy of Manipulative Therapy/Spinal Manipulation Institute. In no way does it relate to chiropractic adjustment as it’s origins are in Osteopathy or Osteopathic Manipulation.  We use an evidence-based approach in diagnosing and treating spine conditions. The bottom line is that it is used safely, and effectively to remedy many spine conditions and some extremity problems. Neck Pain, Headache/Migraine, and Mid Back Pain and Low Back Pain are the most common problems treated with this procedure.

iastmAnother type of Manipulation we use is that of Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization. Special instruments are used to strum and manipulate soft tissue areas of the body that are having problems healing. Conditions such as shoulder tendinitis, plantar fasciitis (heel pain), tenosynovitis of the wrist or thumb, patella tendinitis, and tennis elbow respond very well to this technique, and it’s fairly immediate. Our runners come in for treatment and literally run out of the clinic because this treatment works well with activity. This helps keep people at work too!

Pain Treatment with Dry Needling

dry_needling_closeOk, so we’ve used our non-force methods, manipulation, perhaps some other manual techniques and exercises, and the problem still persists. It’s now time to get “in” to the problem and break the pain pattern and stimulate healing in a direct way. Dry Needling is an excellent treatment for such conditions. Occasionally people present with a problem that this procedure is called for on day one. Many confuse this with acupuncture, and by no means is it even close. Acupuncture involves the use of needles to treat bodily systems by moving “chi” or “energy.” This is a Chinese medicine concept/theory that Dry Needling does NOT use. Acupuncture makes use of acupuncture points and meridians. Dry Needling is not used to treat systems, manipulate energy or chi. This procedure uses Anatomy and Physiology science in order to help a specific problem in a specific body part, i.e. a muscle, tendon, ligament, nerve, or joint. At GT Physical Therapy, we are Certified to provide this procedure. Our state requires a certain number hours of training, but we feel it’s necessary to be credentialed to the highest level in order to ensure that we are giving you the best possible treatment.

Pain Treatment & Beyond

Getting rid of pain is not our primary focus, but it is a main one. Our primary focus is getting to the source of pain and creating a therapeutic change here that not only helps the pain, but it addresses the problem causing the pain. No matter how many fancy bells and whistles a clinic purports to have, keep in mind that it’s the operator, the therapist, and his or her ability to put these things to use in the proper way to help you the patient. How do you know who the best is? Ask around and shop around! And don’t be shy, call and ask to speak with the therapist. Of course, they can’t diagnose you over the phone, but you can quickly tell whether they are a good one to work with or not. What do you ask? 1. Have you ever treated my condition? 2. What should I expect? 3. How long will it take on average to get better? Therapists typically don’t know the cost, but some do. Expect a session to cost from $100-$150 depending. When paying out of pocket, a comfortable payment plan should always be available. With Obamacare, be prepared to pay, so what you pay for should be very worth it! You want results, and fast! I would.  At GT Physical Therapy, 20% of our patients are “out-of-pocket” and they are willing to pay! We must be doing something right. Moreover, more than half of them come from out of town.

Dry Needling Now Provided at GT Physical Therapy!

Your Doctors of Physical Therapy at GT Physical Therapy in Louisville, MS are now certified in Dry Needling by the Dry Needling Institute of the American Academy of Manipulative Therapy. Mississippi’s Attorney General has now made two rulings that Dry Needling is within the scope of care of a Licensed Physical Therapists in Mississippi with 50 hours of training in this procedure.

We are the first Physical Therapy clinic with our Doctors of PT fully certified in dry needling and able to provide this beneficial procedure to its patients.

There are many courses that provide education in dry needling; however, we chose the American Academy of Manipulative Therapy due to it’s rigorous certification process involving both practical and written examinations. In depth and exhaustive research is presented to ensure an evidence-based approach is practiced. Most courses focus on needling of trigger points; however, Dr. James Dunning, DPT, PT, MSc Manip Ther, OCS, MTC, MSPT, MCSP, MAACP (UK), FAAOMPT, MMACP (UK) of the American Academy of Manipulative Therapy and founder of the Spinal Manipulation Institute provides comprehensive training involving not only trigger points but other structures shown to better achieve a therapeutic effect.

Dr. Dunning is quick to point out that although DN is NOT acupuncture in terms of not using concepts of traditional Chinese Medicine, there are many anatomical areas (peri-neural, teno-osseous junctions, tendons, muscles, ligaments, and fascia) that can be used in conjunction with trigger points and other anatomic structures to improve the outcome. Of course, research is provided to back up this methodology. Also an acupuncturist, Dr. Dunning, is the leading provider of education in this field, and we are proud to carry certification through his associated organization.

We also have a great appreciation for the relatively gentle approach as compared to other courses we researched. We are proud to further strengthen our ability to help you feel better, heal faster, and move better!

Basically, dry needling is a procedure we will use when our other painless techniques aren’t getting the job done – and this is rare. Of course, if you are needle-phobic or have other issues that contraindicate needle puncture, this procedure will not be considered.

These needles are small and solid – they’re called monofilaments. Dry needling is very safe, also! Be sure to call us now to see if this method can help you get out of pain and get into life!

Kinesiotape in the Olympics and at GT Physical Therapy

You may have noticed a multitude of olympic athletes across all competitions sporting a fancy looking, multi-colored tape. Kinesiotape is a special tape used support, relax, or stimulate a specific body part. You’d be surprised to find that health care professionals achieve levels of certification in being able to use Kinesiotape for certain musculoskeletal problems. Mary Margaret Crowson, PT, DPT of GT Physical Therapy is certified in Kinesiotape application and has had great success with it. Conditions such as shoulder pain, low back pain, neck pain, thoracic pain, elbow problems, knee pain, and swelling in joints or other areas all respond very well and fairly immediate to Kinesiotape when applied properly. Dr. Crowson will use it to achieve a specific function depending on the problem being treated. It’s not a simple process by any means, but the desired outcome is very simple – Increase function and decrease pain.

Kinesiotape does not improve the ability of an unaffected body part so it’s not a performance enhancer. However, if you have a body part that is bothering you, Kinesiotape can provide immediate relief and motion improvement (if there’s a deficit).

In July, the Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy published a study of 42 people with shoulder injuries. Half of them were treated with Kinesio tape applied in a pattern designed to support the injured muscle. The other half were given a “sham” treatment in which two strips of tape were simply pressed across the arm. The study was conducted by physical therapists at Winn Army Community Hospital in Fort Stewart, Ga., who didn’t receive funding from the tape company. Notably, the study participants who received the real therapeutic tape treatment reported an immediate improvement in pain.

New Method of Pain Treatment Added

As if we weren’t already conquering those persistent chronic pain problems that plague people for years, now we’re adding another method to improve our results even further!

Of course, sometimes there are those people that just don’t respond to even our progressive approaches. And that’s what I’m going after – the non-responders. I’m also going after those who only got 50% better. Chronic neck pain and Chronic low back pain are the two problems I’m most interested in – including radiating pain into the arm or leg.

I look forward to reporting my results!

Defeating Chronic Pain

Bookmark and Share

I am truly enjoying my results with my private chronic neck and low back pain clients – years of pain gradually coming to an end. It’s unfortunate when people get stuck in the medication-injection loop and are merely waiting for surgery. Many of these people have had physical therapy, chiropractic…the works. Why is my method working? I believe it has to do with my model of determining what to do, when to do it, and where to do it. If these patients aren’t getting hands on corrective care leading to independent pain free movements – they won’t heal, they won’t get better. It’s easy to temporarily cover the pain. Why do that when you can activate the body’s own healing processes and address the problem? If surgery is being considered, what factors lead up to the patient needing surgery? Same concept with injections – “what factors lead up to this condition?”…I want to fix those factors 🙂
